In my experience, ARPGs have a repetetive quality that appeals to a certain type of gamers. WoW actually stole some concepts from D2 (e.g., talent trees, randomized loot), but I think the experiences are very distinct. This specific term of art does not mean an RPG with action elements, a la Fable, it is a specific type of RPG that usually features an isometric perspective, emphasis on activating abilities, lots of left clicking, fighting swarms of enemies, randomized maps, randomized enemy generation, allocating stat points for your character, and sifting through piles and piles of (usually randomized) loot for upgrades and vendoring the rest for gold. The Diablo series was a pioneer in what many call the Action RPG genre. Torchlight 2 is a Diablo 2 clone-made by many of the same people that made Diablo 2. ![]()
